Living In Rabat

Although often spoken in the same breath as the neighbouring city of Mdina, Rabat is a village that has plenty to offer in its own right. The name ‘Rabat’ is derived from the Arabic word for suburb, as the village was to the old capital city Mdina. Today, however, the locality of Rabat is far bigger than Mdina, with a growing population that has inspired an influx of new business and residential developments. 

As an elegant mix of the old and the new, this steady modernisation has been added in keeping with the medieval charm throughout the town, with many old façades being kept as part of the new buildings. Rabat’s central location in Malta makes it easy for residents to travel to much of the rest of the island, for work, shopping or sightseeing.

Although it is an ever-growing and busy village, nature is still close at hand for those living in the locality of Rabat. A short walk away to the neighbouring ‘Silent City’ of Mdina, there are stunning panoramic views of Malta available from the city’s hilltop fortifications. Meanwhile the nearby woodland area of Buskett Gardens is one of Malta’s few forest areas, and is ideal for family picnics or a peaceful stroll.
